In addition to releasing new versions of the system software at regular intervals, Apple also releases a stream of free software updates to enrich your computing experience. Mac OS X automatically checks weekly for software updates provided you have an internet connection.

You can choose a different schedule, or check manually if you don’t have a continuous Internet connection. If Software Update finds an item to download, it appears in a list. Click on an item to get a description before downloading it. If you see updates that you will never use, such as a language you don’t speak or drivers for a printer you don’t own, choose Make Inactive from the Update menu.

To get updates immediately, follow these steps:

Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
Choose Software Update from the View menu.
Click Update Now.
Select the items you want to install, then click Install.
Enter an Admin user name and password.
After the update is complete, restart the computer if necessary.

There will be two new joiners to the smart phone craze, at least according sources who would rather not be named. And Verizon will be the one that will offer them.

According to an article on Business Week, Verizon Wireless will be offering to phones from Microsoft. The phones will reportedly be available by May or June, and is targeted towards teenagers.

Thus far, Microsoft has been content with being a software provider, having its mobile Windows software on phones offered by other manufacturers. This time around, Microsoft will be doing a Google; the latter is now selling its own phone, the Nexus One. What such a move will do to Microsoft’s relationship with other manufacturers and service providers remains to be seen. The source of Business Week, however, mentioned that “Microsoft will continue to work closely with handset companies that make Windows phones and the mobile carriers that sell them.”Verizon to Offer Microsoft Phones, Its presumed target audience belies the features that the phones

are expected to have. Among the features that can be expected from the phones is easy access to social networking sites and keyboards for text messaging, things that teenagers will most definitely want in a phone. The phones will reportedly be manufactured by Sharp Corp. and will feature both the Microsoft and Verizon Wireless brands.

One of the sources also revealed that the phones are “intended to address a similar audience as Motorola Inc.’s Cliq or T-Mobile USA Inc.’s Sidekick.” Microsoft had acquired Danger Inc., maker of the software for Sidekick, in 2008. The Cliq, on the other hand, is known for a software called Motoblur, “which serves up Twitter messages, pictures and contacts to the phone’s home screen.”

SOFTWARE IMPERIALIST Microsoft intends to stick to its guns and keep its empire running in China despite Google's diplomatic shenanigans, according to Reuters.

We reported last month that the usually foot-in-mouth prone Steve Ballmer was surprisingly circumspect when Google said it would cease operations in China. The Vole's CEO called the incident a "Google Problem" that didn't affect any other companies with interests in the Chinese market.

In an interview with Reuters, Zhang Yaqin, chairman of Microsoft's Asia-Pacific R&D group, said Microsoft is in China for the long haul. He said, "Regardless of whether or not Google stays, we will aggressively promote our search and cloud computing in China."

"We hope to achieve a relatively important place in the China search market. We hope to achieve a relatively important place in the China search market. But we must be very patient; we still need a lot of time," he said.

Microsoft has a big promotion job to do with its own search technologies and a reinvigorated mobile software business if it wants to exploit the critical success of Window Phone 7 Series. "Photoshop functionality can then easily be accessed from an online auction, real estate or social media application so users can quickly fix photos and make them look their best, before being showcased."

It's not the first time Adobe has lashed out against Apple--in late January, Adobe took the computing giant to task for its decision to withhold support for Flash from the forthcoming iPad tablet device. Writing on the Adobe Flash Platform Blog, marketing group manager Adrian Ludwig contended that without Flash support, "there's something important missing from Apple's approach to connecting consumers to content... It looks like Apple is continuing to impose restrictions on their devices that limit both content publishers and consumers."

Lose the Trojan

Lose the Trojan, Deb asked the Answer Line forum how she can remove a Trojan from an infected .dll file called infamiqayoq.dll. Her security software quarantined the file, but now she gets an error message every time she boots.

That file is the Trojan, and serves no valid purpose. The strange file name (which as I write this yields nothing in a Google search beyond Deb's PC World forum post) gives it away. Malware programs often rename themselves to random character strings as they propagate.

Now that the file is quarantined, best to let the security program delete it entirely.

But what about that error message every time you boot? With the file gone, the message is just a harmless annoyance. But it's still best to get rid of it. Select Start (Start, then Run in XP), type msconfig, and press ENTER. Click the Startup tab. Search the Command column in the resulting table (you may have to expand it) until you find the culprit. Uncheck and it and click OK.

As SpiritWind pointed out in the original forum discussion, the Trojan probably put more than one file on your PC, so it's best to scan the hard drive again. Use your existing security software, but follow that up with a scan from something else. And I'm still recommending the free version of either SUPERAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware--or both.

Apple purges Wi-Fi stumblers from App Store

Here we go again. Not long after apps with inappropriate content were pulled from the App Store, Apple removed all traces of another kind of app on Thursday—this time for less controversial reasons.
The victims of the moment are apps with Wi-Fi stumbling features, such as Wifi-Where, yFy, and Sekai Camera. These are applications that can not only show the location of every nearby Wi-Fi hotspot based on information from an online directory, but also can dynamically add more listings based on what Wi-Fi access points the iPhone detects in the immediate vicinity. There's just one problem; that feature, dubbed “stumbling,” is accomplished through the use of undocumented, private APIs.

Private APIs are software development frameworks tailored for the iPhone system software and nothing else. Apple may completely change, replace, or remove them in a future iPhone OS update. The moment that happens, any third party iPhone app that depends on the private API in question will likely display strange behavior, become crash-prone, or simply fail to work. That's why the iPhone development terms state that third party apps are forbidden from using private APIs. However, a few exceptions and compromises have been made.
You might have heard that Apple has previously pulled apps from the store that rely upon private APIs. Recently, however, the company has taken steps to avoid those drastic measures by contacting developers to request that they remove features dependent on private APIs in their application's next update. In the case of USB syncing, one developer came to an agreement which allowed longtime users to continue using that feature in all future updates, on the condition that they don't uninstall that app from their iPhone.
Though Apple's response this time has been relatively swift and uncompromising, it doesn't affect Wi-Fi hotspot seeking apps that only search from a directory, like Wi-Fi Finder and Spots. 3jacks Software, developers of Wifi-Where, has stated that it hopes that “Apple will allow [Wi-Fi stumbling] functionality in a future SDK.“

IBM acquires software development company,

International Business Machines Corp., Travis County's third largest employer, has closed two acquisitions.
The information technology company purchased Virginia-based National Interest Security Co. LLC this week for an undisclosed amount. It also recently acquired the assets of health care data management vendor Initiate Systems Inc.
NISC is a privately-held company headquartered in Fairfax, Va. that specializes in systems engineering, biometrics, document and media exploitation, systems integration, software development, enterprise architecture, security, information assurance, analysis support and critical infrastructure protection.

IBM (Nyse: IBM) said the companies will be integrated into its global business services and information management divisions. Officials said the purchase will allow IBM to expand its federal, state and local government entities work, particularly in defense, health care, energy, logistics and security.
IBM did not say if the purchases would increase staff at Austin's 6,239-person office. Earlier this week, the Communication Workers of America Union said IBM was planning to cut about 2,500 workers from its United States and Canada offices. The group is not officially recognized as representing IBM workers, but it is affiliated with the Alliance@IBM group.

Opera Browser Downloads Triple After Microsoft Airs Browser Ballot, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 is the slowest of the major browsers on the market, but it (along with its previous editions) is also currently still clinging to almost 60 percent market share. Some say the large market share is because it's relatively secure (despite a large number of attacks due to its major market share) and because its easily managed with IT software. None of that explains the high consumer usage, though, as the general public typically isn't overly informed when it comes to security and doesn't use any sort of IT management tools.

Norway-based Opera Software, who manufactures a popular third-party browser, complained that the reason Microsoft dominated in this increasingly lucrative market was not as a result of merit, but rather via anticompetitive techniques -- by bundling Internet Explorer with its ubiquitous Windows OS. It successfully petitioned European Union antitrust regulators to mandate Microsoft to adopt a "ballot screen" approach with Windows, giving users a free pick from a variety of browsers. That feature went online this week.

The early results appear to validate Opera's claims that Microsoft's advantage was artificially produced. Describes Rolf Assev, Opera's chief strategy officer, "Since the browser choice screen rollout, Opera downloads have more than tripled in major European countries, such as Belgium, France, Spain, Poland and the UK."

Why does Opera care about browser market share so much? Opera was among the first browser makers to broker a deal with a search engine giant (in its case Google) to auction off the browser's default search engine. As search engines lead to advertising revenue, and many users rely on the default search, such deals typically bring tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars to the browser maker. The size of the deal typically depends, though, on the number of active users, so getting users to download your browser is critical.

The browser ballot screen was delivered to EU users via Windows Update. When the users update, if their default browser is Internet Explorer (which is the case if you just installed Windows), the customer will receive an Internet Explorer Window that prompts them to pick between 12 browsers, including Microsoft's own Internet Explorer. Opera is included among the randomly generated list along with Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

Despite the apparent success of the experiment, and gains for third party browser makers like Opera and Mozilla, some aren't entirely satisfied with the results. Shawn Hardin -- chief executive of Flock, Europe's sixth largest browser -- says that even though there's a scroll bar to find more options (lesser known browsers), that most customers won't realize that there's more picks than the ones initially positioned onscreen in the frame (Opera, IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari). That, he says, isn't fair.

He comments, "Frankly, nobody knows there are more than five options. We see this as unfair."

Despite this and some minor other complaints, the larger third parties, Microsoft, and the European Union antitrust regulators all seem relatively pleased with the browser ballot system.

Given this success, one can't help but wonder whether the ballot screen could be making its way to the U.S. sometime in the near future.

On-demand CRM firm RightNow Technologies has unveiled a new pricing and licensing structure that it hopes will shake up the SaaS industry. The company said that its Cloud Services Agreement (CSA) will offer users a more flexible and fairer approach to SaaS.

Greg Gianforte, CEO and founder of RightNow, said that the CSA will finally deliver on the promise of cloud computing, which has changed the way companies implement and use IT but still suffers from a lot of the contractual problems that impact on-premise software. He also issued a challenge to other SaaS vendors to follow RightNow’s initiative.

“The promise of SaaS was that we could significantly lower the total cost of ownership of enterprise applications with faster deployment and more rapid innovation, but also that we could eliminate shelfware and long-term lock in,” he said at an event in San Francisco.

“But the reality is that as an industry we’ve only delivered on half the promise. We’ve solved the technical delivery issues but not the engagement issues. Some of the worst aspects of enterprise software procurement have been brought into the cloud.”

These aspects, Gianforte explained, include paying for software not being used, long negotiations centred on tying customers into long-term contracts with little flexibility and hidden costs.

To combat these issues, RightNow has developed the CSA. The key points of the CSA include the ability to align usage up or down annually depending on business needs; a three-year price commitment with a three-year renewal price cap, so clients could pay the same price for six years; an annual termination for convenience, meaning clients can assess each year whether the deal is working and walk away from the deal if they wish.

The CSA also includes annual pools of capacity, enabling clients to adjust the number of seats they buy each year to accommodate seasonality and fluctuations in business; cash service level credits, where RightNow will refund a percentage of a user’s subscription fee if SLAs are not met; and unlimited capacity for 90-day trials.

Gianforte also attacked RightNow’s SaaS rivals, including Oracle and salesforce.com, as he challenged them to follow his company’s lead. “SaaS vendors are masquerading in cloud clothing. Oracle is the poster child for bad customer relations – escalating prices, increasing maintenance, contract lock-ins, unexpected fees. Salesforce.com, although it innovated on the delivery side, has embraced the worst of traditional enterprise software in the way they do their contracts.”

RightNow’s Cloud Challenge invites other players in the field to embrace the same ideas RightNow has, such as no shelfware, a minimum five-year price certainty, on long-term lock-ins, the ability to flex up or down, rollover usage and cash reimbursements.

“We believe to deliver on the promise of the cloud we have to significantly move the industry forward. We think the points raised in the cloud challenge should be part of every software contract,” Gianforte said.

However, he added, all have been offered jobs by SecurityCoverage.

Vernon Telephone Cooperative provides help-desk service for seven Wisconsin telephone companies for voice, video and Internet support. SecurityCoverage is assuming that function and also will serve other customers.

“SecurityCoverage has experienced solid growth within (Wisconsin) over the past year and we currently work with approximately 20 ISPs (Internet service providers) and telecom providers in Wisconsin,” Welsh said. “A second site allows us to serve this growing numbers of Wisconsin partners and customer base and enhances the company’s disaster recovery plan with a fully redundant center.”

Support calls that will be handled by the Westby center will range from Internet connection issues to SecurityCoverage product support, virus removal and advanced virtual personal computer repair.

“I think this is great,” Westby Mayor Daniel Jefson said. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for Westby.”

Jefson said any community adding jobs during the existing recession should be excited and thankful.

The company primarily offers its services through partnerships with Internet service providers, telecommunications and cable companies, and financial institutions.

According to an official announcement made this morning, the iPad, Apple's first tablet computer, will hit store shelves on April 3. Those who want to be among the first to get one can put down a pre-order on Saturday, March 12.
Apple gave no reason for the delay, which will put the release 80 days after Jobs unveiled this model.
A Two-Phased Approach
The versions being released early next month will depend entirely on Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet.
Versions that can access AT&T's 3G are scheduled for release in late April, which means their launch has not been pushed back. Pre-orders for the 3G versions will also start March 12.

Consumers will be able to choose from a version with 16 GB of storage capacity for $500, a 32 GB one for $600, or a 64 GB version for $700. Those who chose to add 3G capabilities will have to add $130 to these prices, plus a monthly fee.
International Availability
Apple announced today that its iPad will be available next month in several countries outside of the U.S.
Both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G version will be introduced in late April in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK.
Pricing for the different version outside of the U.S. will be announced in April, and Apple says this tablet computer will ship in additional countries later this year.

Each year, as many as 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) study might help prevent some of those bites—particularly with children. UAB psychologists are testing a software program designed to teach children to interact safely with dogs. The Blue Dog software program, created by the Blue Dog Trust in the United Kingdom, contains games that instruct children to avoid behaviors that can trigger bites, like tail or ear pulling and making direct eye contact.

The researchers plan to offer the software to 100 Birmingham-area families with children between the ages of 3 and 6 then test their interaction with live dogs both before and after using the program. Researchers at the University of Guelph in Canada are also conducting the same study.
"If this computer game successfully teaches young children to interact safely with their pet dogs, it could have enormous impact on reducing accidental bites from pet dogs," says UAB psychologist Dr. David Schebel.

Panasonic Computer Solutions Company has introduced the Panasonic Toughbook H1 Field, a rugged handheld tablet computer designed for truck drivers and other mobile workers. The new computer was built to operate in demanding conditions.
The Panasonic Toughbook H1 Field includes a 500 nit, 10.4-inch dual-touch display that offers both tablet and touchscreen functionality. The display also includes a circular polarizer, plus anti-glare and anti-reflective screen treatments, making it easily viewable in direct sunlight. At Macworld, Spotlight Falls on Smaller Companies

Apple chose not to exhibit at the Macworld 2010 Conference and Expo, which wraps up Saturday in San Francisco, and as a result the show certainly has a different vibe — but I'm having a hard time putting my finger on just what that vibe is. On one hand, this Macworld doesn't hum with the excitement of marquee new products, which Apple has delivered in past years. There was no big Steve Jobs keynote, and Apple's giant booth isn't here to dwarf all of the other companies' booths. In fact, of the big companies that cater to the Mac, only Microsoft has a presence here, showing off a preview of Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac.

As a result, the smaller companies that encompass the Macintosh and iPhone ecosystem are getting more attention. Here are some products and trends that caught my eye this year.

iTouch gloves. We may not get the kind of severe winter weather that buried the East Coast this week, but Seattle can still be uncomfortably cold. Several companies were demonstrating gloves that let you operate an iPhone or iPod touch without removing them. iTouch Gloves (www.itouchgloves.com) were by far the best, employing a proprietary "capacitive leather" material that works with the devices' touch screen and not resorting to using capacitive touch pads at the fingertips, like the other companies' gloves. The fashionable iTouch gloves cost between $99 and $195, depending on style.

Aperture 3. OK, Apple wasn't completely invisible this week, even if it wasn't present. On Tuesday the company released Aperture 3 (www.apple.com/aperture/), a significant update to the professional photo application. In addition to gaining new improvements such as the Faces and Places features found in iPhoto and adjustment brushes for editing areas of an image, Aperture 3 now supports video files in photo libraries and boasts an interface that makes it more appealing to people looking to transition from iPhoto. Aperture 3 is available now for $199 new, or $99 as an upgrade from a previous version; a free 30-day trial is also available as a download.

BusyCal. This calendar software from BusyMac (www.busymac.com) was introduced at last year's Macworld Expo and released several months later, but the company's booth was busy this year with people who are fed up with, or just tired of, Apple's built-in iCal program. BusyCal uses the same core data as iCal for basic event information and accesses it with an improved user interface.

The key selling point, however, is BusyCal's capability to share calendars among computers on a network or over the Internet using Google Calendar. My wife and I use BusyCal to track our individual schedules, as well as share a calendar devoted to our daughter's activities that we can both edit independently. BusyCal costs $49 for a single user license, or $79 for a family pack.

iPad cases. With Apple out of the picture, there were no iPads to be ogled, but a few companies, including Targus, were showing off prototype cases for the new tablet device. As with the market for iPhone and iPod cases, all sorts of materials and designs are going to be available when the iPad ships in March.

Doxie. Recently someone asked me, "Aren't we in that paperless future yet?" (I told him I'd fax him the answer.) The Doxie personal scanner (www.getdoxie.com) aims to get us a few steps closer to that ideal. The diminutive sheet-fed scanner can digitize documents and photos, but it's the software that makes Doxie appealing.

You can add photos to iPhoto or upload them to photo-sharing sites like Flickr; documents can be stored on your hard drive or automatically added to personal data services such as Evernote or Google Docs. Doxie is available for pre-order at $129, and will be available in late March.

Toyota may widen safety upgrade to older vehicles

WASHINGTON – Toyota said today it will consider upgrading more of its older vehicles with software designed to override the accelerator pedal if the brake is pushed at the same time, and will also review complaints of sudden acceleration in its Tacoma pickups. In a letter to the U.S. House Oversight committee, Toyota also said it knew of no electronics problems in its vehicles that could account for sudden acceleration. It said it had hired an outside engineering firm to test its systems, and found no problems.

The news came just as Toyota announced yet another recall, this time for drive shafts in 8,000 Tacoma pickups.

The pledges from the Japanese automaker came in response to questions from the committee, which is scheduled to hold the first congressional hearing on the automaker’s recent recalls on Feb. 24.

Toyota has been under fire after issuing three new recalls and expanding a fourth in the space of a few weeks, affecting some 9 million vehicles worldwide. U.S. regulators have said the automaker had to be goaded into action repeatedly on several safety issues, and Toyota chief executive Akio Toyoda has apologized three times, vowing a full review.

Federal regulators have received some 2,000 complaints of such problems in Toyota and Lexus models going back several model years.

As part of the recall for floor mats that could trap accelerator pedals, Toyota is upgrading the software in five models with a “smart pedal” system that causes the brake to override the accelerator. The automaker has said the system will be standard in all its new models by the end of this year.

“Toyota will consider expanding brake override capability to additional models,” the company said in its letter.

Among the eight probes by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into sudden acceleration and Toyotas was a 2008 investigation involving Tacoma pickups. The agency closed the probe saying it could not find proof of a defect despite 400 complaints.

Toyota said many of the problems in the Tacoma case appeared minor. At the time of the probe, Toyota said many of the complaints, linked to 51 crashes and 12 injuries, were “inspired by publicity.”

“While these reports are related to customer satisfaction with the vehicle, they do not suggest the presence of a safety defect,” Toyota said.

“Nevertheless, in the spirit of the recent commitment made by Mr. Toyoda that our company will review all safety issues and potential safety issues with renewed vigor, we will be reexamining these complaints.”

Toyoda has said he would travel to the United States to explain his company’s changes in person. U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., asked the House Oversight committee to call Toyoda to testify, using a subpoena if necessary.

HP's Smartbook May Battle It out With Apple's IPad

Hewlett-Packard's first smartbook, the Compaq AirLife 100, announced on Friday, could be a rival to Apple's iPad as the two companies aim to attract buyers looking for netbook alternatives, analysts said.

AirLife is a hybrid laptop that combines the hardware and software usually found in a smartphone with the design of a netbook. It is as portable as a netbook but offers longer battery life of up to 12 hours. Apple will soon start shipping the iPad tablet, a handheld device designed to let users browse the Internet, play games, read e-books and view video content.

Though some features differ, the iPad and AirLife share several characteristics, including simplified software interfaces, similarly sized touch-screen displays, and an emphasis on making it quick and easy to access online content. Both devices also have Arm processors, while most netbooks use Intel processors.

The AirLife includes a 10.1-inch touch screen and comes with Wi-Fi b/g or optional 3G wireless broadband connectivity. The device weighs around 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running at 1GHz. It includes 16GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM and 512MB of flash storage. It also includes an SD card slot for external storage.

By comparison, the iPad is powered by an Apple A4 chip (based on an Arm design) running at 1GHz. It comes with storage capacities of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. It is about half-an-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and has a 9.7-inch touch-screen display. The device comes with a software-based, on-screen keyboard. Wireless features include 802.11n Wi-Fi, optional 3G mobile broadband and Bluetooth.

Hewlett-Packard plans to initially distribute the AirLife through Telefonica, which is in Europe and Latin America, said Mike Hockey, an HP spokesman. Hockey said there were no plans to distribute the product in the U.S. and declined comment on distribution in other regions including Asia-Pacific and Japan. HP did not provide a specific date for when the AirLife will become available, saying only that it will be out in the spring.

The lack of distribution in the U.S. and Asia-Pacific could give the advantage to Apple, which will make its product available worldwide in roughly 50 days. Despite being the world's largest PC maker, HP is being cautious with the AirLife, said Jay Chou, a research analyst at IDC. The limited availability through one carrier means it is testing the product before rolling it out worldwide.

"Western Europe is the biggest market for [telecom] operators to bundle netbooks through. It seems like a likely place to test out the waters with regards to smartbooks," Chou said. Netbook shipments have grown in Europe as more telecom operators bundle low-cost laptops with wireless contracts, Chou said.

Apple also has an advantage with the familiar iPhone software interface in the iPad that users may find easier to adapt to, said Ezra Gottheil, an analyst at Technology Business Research.

Smartbooks have a folding design, like netbooks, and use the Linux operating system. Linux has seen slower adoption rates on netbooks compared to Windows, partly because fewer applications are available and because of hardware compatibility issues.

However, HP's AirLife will use Google's Linux-based Android OS, which has some cache and has found wider acceptance in the mobile-phone community. Android's growing popularity could help lift the smartbook segment, Chou said.

Some multimedia capabilities and hardware features could also drive buying decisions, Gottheil said. Each device offers its own multimedia advantages -- the iPad supports 720p high-definition video, but smartbooks support Flash content, which the iPad does not.

"We don't know how much that will handicap the iPad in the market," Gottheil said.

The lack of a keyboard could affect purchasing decisions for the iPad, but it may be an advantage if the device is used as a multimedia device, for example as a video device on airplanes, Gottheil said.

Price is also a determining factor. The iPad starts at US$499. It can be bought as a standalone product, though users are likely to want a data plan as well. HP did not provide pricing information for the AirLife, which is tied to mobile contracts that will also add to the purchase price.

Enterprise Software Release Management

Over the past several decades, we have seen an evolution in enterprise architecture. The evolution has gone from monolithic architectures (COBOL-based programs running on mainframes) to component-based architectures (Java EE and .NET applications) and headed towards Service-Oriented Architectures (transforming the enterprise into a highly interoperable and reusable collection of services which positions it to better adapt to ever-changing business needs).

As the progression of an architectural approach leads to more reuse and separation of concerns, enterprise application development continues to require well-defined processes and more tiers of technology. As a result, some areas of enterprise application development increase in complexity. In enterprise development (Java EE, .NET, etc.), software vendors have made strides to reduce this complexity by providing advanced code generation and process automated tooling, and have simplified complex aspects of enterprise development through usage of proven design patterns and best practices.

However, on the periphery, there is one aspect of enterprise development which may be often overlooked. This is software release management. Some of the challenges facing a Software Release Manager include the management of:

Software Defects
Issues
Risks
Software Change Requests
New Development Requests (additional features and functions)
Deployment and Packaging
New Development Tasks

Now this may seem reasonable when you are focusing on a single software release of a stand-alone application, but…

Consider working with a highly complex transactional custom development non-shrink wrapped application. The application development team needs to be able to develop new features/functions and release them as generally accepted a half-dozen times a year to the user base (major releases). The application development team also needs to release 40-50 minor releases (additional feature/functions, patches, etc.), in addition to accounting for a mechanism to handle emergency release, which is any modification, update and or deployment of an application (typically a Enterprise Archive file or .ear, Java Archive or .jar, etc.) that has not been planned or scheduled.

Furthermore, the application has dependencies and interdependencies on other applications within the enterprise (in producing a successful build).

What is a Software Release Manager to do?

This article will present an implementation approach using IBM Rational ClearQuest as a foundational component to overcome some of the challenges facing a Software Release Manager.

The intent of the article is not that this is a new challenge or that Rational is the be-all, end-all. The challenge is an old one facing Software Release Managers, but the challenge is becoming ever more complex with global delivery, time pressures and systems integration needs. The solution will be one that focuses less on Rational as a tool and more on Rational as an enabler.

The Software Release Manager can use the Rational tools as an enabler to standard project management processes such as the "Project Management Institute’s Guide to Project Body of Knowledge" (PMBOK). The PMBOK identifies nine knowledge areas:

Integration Management
Scope Management
Time Management
Cost Management
Quality Management
Human Resource Management
Communication Management
Risk Management
Procurement Management

This article will show how the process and tool can help the Software Release Manager enable four of the nine Knowledge Areas. The four areas are Scope, Quality, Communication and Risk Management. The enablement will be through a concept known as the Software Release Record. The Software Release Record is custom record type within Rational ClearQuest that will be described in detail as part of this article.

The remaining five and certain aspects of the other four would be handled by the integration of tools such as Rational Portfolio Manager (RPM) or Microsoft Project, which will not be covered.

Before we get into the Release Record and two closely related state-based record types, the Incident and Work Request, we should first get some definitions as provided in the PMBOK.

Scope Management provides guidance to ensure that the project includes the work required and only the work required to complete the project successfully.

Quality Management includes all of the activities of the performing organization that determine quality policies, objectives and responsibilities so that the project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken.

Communication Management employs the processes that ensure timely and appropriate generation, collection, distribution, storage, retrieval and ultimate disposition of communications.

Risk Management includes the processes concerned with conducting risk management planning, identification, analysis, responses and monitoring.

So after all the build up and useful industry accepted definitions, what is the Software Release Record?

The Software Release Record is a state based record type. It captures data elements such as the Release Manager’s name, release number, release type (compliance or discretionary), pre-production deployment date (when the software is deployed to an application server) and the production date (when the software is generally available).

Worth mentioning at this time is a standard for software release numbering. It is worth mentioning, because while it appears to be a trivial thing, I have seen much conjecture and debate over the topic. As a Release Manager, standards and process will be key to your overall success. Although the intention is not to present all of the standards and process that are needed to be an effective Release Manager. One of the foundational standards is the numbering convention for releases. Release Numbering should follow an industry standard like the International Organization for Standards (ISO). The figure below provides a standard for numbering and naming releases that is flexible enough to handle most software delivery situations.

The Software Release record has a fairly basic workflow to track the progress in the software development lifecycle.

Here is the workflow of the software release record:

The Software Release record is a parent record to other state-based record types, which provides the Release Manager a 30,000-foot view of the release, but I’m sure you’re asking yourself, how do you manage the 10-foot view?

Taking a step deeper into the process we come upon two additional state-based record types, the Incident and Work Request records.

The incident record type can be classified as a defect, issue, risk, change request, etc and because of the different classifications, the incident record type has a fairly complex state transition matrix:

The Incident record type captures the description, headline (a short description), owner name, priority, severity, related software release records, related Incident records and related work requests.

When an Incident record is moving into the Slotted state it must be associated with a Software Release record.

One of the complaints heard frequently from users is when they need to recreate a record because it is tedious to copy and paste the information from the current record to the new record which is easy enough to do but has great potential for errors such as pasting a value in the wrong field or forgetting to copy a value from the original record to the new record. One way to resolve that issue was to give users a way to clone a record without having to manually copy and paste. This not only creates a record and populates it with the data from the original record, but it also creates a link between the two records. The code to clone a record is available via Shmuel Bashan's developerWorks article in the resources section, below.

The code on developerWorks had to be broken up into different scripts to work with the various incident types. The first script (see the code sample attached to this document, contained in clone_record.zip) is to identify what type of incident record the user is attempting to clone which then executes the appropriate additional script to clone the record.

A limitation with a ClearCase/UCM/ClearQuest enabled implementation is that a record can only be assigned in one project/stream/view and only one person can be working on it at a time. However, it is likely that there could be several people working on a change at one time or they could be working on the same change in different streams, in different parts of the globe.

In order to overcome this limitation, one could implement the Work Request record type. The Work Request record could be a state-based record type with the Unified Change Management (UCM) package applied.

The work request record must be created from within an Incident record because many of the data elements are copied directly from the incident record to the work request record and the two records are then linked to each other. The work request record is almost ‘disposable’ in that it has a very short lifecycle and because the user does not have to input much data a work request can be easily created, assigned, worked on, and then closed. Once the developer has completed the coding changes, passed code review and unit tested the changes the record is closed. This will alert the incident manager that the record is ready to be moved to the next state.

The state transition matrix for the work request record is fairly simple:

Since the Software Release record, the Incident record and the Work Request record are all related there are a couple of points where the system does some validation. When an incident record is moving into the Resolved state the system checks to ensure all work requests that are associated with the Incident are closed and will not permit the record to move into the Resolved state until they are. A similar validation happens when the incident record is being moved into the Closed state since the Quality Assurance team may create a new work request to track their work effort. The other validation happens when the Software Release record is moving into the Deployed state. The system will validate that all associated incident records have been closed before letting the software release record move into a deployed state.

Incident Record in action

To further exemplify the importance of the concept of Incident record, a sample use case which exercises the full integration among Rational Application Developer (IDE), Rational Clearcase (SCM) and Rational Clearquest (issue tracking) is detailed below.

As the illustration depicts above, the Incident record is the enabler which ties the concepts of incidents (defect), incident resolution (defect fix) resolution and issue tracking together.

The use case is as flows:

Through testing, a software defect has been identified and entered as an incident in ClearQuest.
Via ClearQuest, the defect manager then assigns the defect to an application developer for further analysis.
The developer analyses the defect and proceeds to work on a defect fix. The developer accesses and checks code out from the RAD IDE.
A dialogue box prompts the developer to associate the code checkout with an incident record. The developer identifying the appropriate incident record will tie the potential defect fix and software defect together.
After the defect fix has been checked into Clearcase, the project manager or defect manager can run reports in Clearquest to monitor the progress and status of defects and issues.
Deployment and Packaging
New Development Tasks

Artifacts:

One of the artifacts that result from this approach is the Software Release Calendar; the calendar can be categorized as a PMI Communication Management enabler. The easy production of a Release Calendar through Rational ClearQuest by querying the Release Record provides a single view of the releases scheduled for a given time frame (day, week, month, year). Other communication artifacts include but are not limited to include logs (issues, risk, etc.) and reports (defect, change request, etc)

Lessons Learned:

Make sure the development team understands the benefits of the release record and integrated software tools, processes, and project management discipline approach.
Communicate, communicate and communicate. The Release Calendar is a powerful tool. Make sure people are using it a one of there main source of Release data.
Use standards where possible, do not duplicate. For example there is a standard approach for numbering software releases, use it.
Partner with the existing entity or establish a Governance Board for Software Tools and Processes.
Ensure that your tool administrator understands your vision and the business environment and constraints.

Conclusion:

By using the software tools, processes, and project management disciplines discussed the Release Manager can:

Have a single view of the releases scheduled for a given time frame (day, week, month, year).
Run complex relational queries based on management requirements and produce Metrics.
Have access to the most current Release information
Have a more granular view of issues, risks, defects, deployment requests and change requests to a given release.
Produce a release calendar
Move towards a more mature software configuration management process
Support and enable regulatory requirements like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX), through tracking, history collection, sign-off mechanisms and other programmatic and custom capabilities of the tool.
Support and enable processes like the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), through standard processes and metric collection.
Have any of the his or her constituencies view relevant data regardless of time and geography.

Regardless of the role you play in a Enterprise development project, weather it be the Release Manager, Project Manager, Analyst, Architect, Developer Tester, Deployment Manager or Executive, a strong project management foundation and software that is integrated into the Integrated-Development Environment (IDE), Software Configuration Management (SCM) system and the Project Management tools and development methodology is a must.

　時として、まるで季節によって聴きたい音楽が変わるように、音楽によって季節が変わるような感覚を経験する。Sad Day For Puppetsが奏でる音楽はプレイボタンを押した瞬間に広がる春だ。桜もとうに散ってしまった四月の午後、HAHA FONOGRAMレーベルのAlex Svenson-Metesからメールで届いたのはそのバンド、Sad Day For PuppetsのMp3とプレスリリースだった。

　送られてきた曲のタイトルは「Cherry Blossom」。今月発売されたばかりのニュー・シングルだ。

　アブストラクトな淡いピンクのジャケットから飛び出すのはMy Bloody Valentineよりスウィートに煌き鳴り響くギター・ポップ。Last Days Of Aprilの「Tears On Hold」みたいなリフが甘酸っぱいカップリングの「Set Alight」もリピート必至だ。何といっても注目なのはマジー・スターのホープ・サンドヴァルを思わせるヴォーカル、Anna Eklundの甘く儚い歌声と存在感だろう。さらに、ポップと言い切るだけではもったいないほど磨き上げられたソング・ライティングと60年代のフィル・スペクター的音響空間が相まって醸し出されるドリーミーな浮遊感も魅力のひとつ。数多あるシューゲイザー・バンドの中でもこの人たちの輝きが本物なのは、当然のことかもしれない。

　プレスリリースによるとバンドは2006年にストックホルム郊外のBlackbergで結成。ソングライターでギター兼キーボードのMartin Kallholmと同じく友人でギタリストのMarcus Sandgren、ヴォーカルAnnaの３ピースで始まり、ベーシストでプロデューサーのAlexとドラマーのMicael Backが後からメンバーに加わったそうだ。ダイナソーJr.直系のギターが印象的な「Marble Gods」を聴くと、メンバーが10代を過ごした90年代前半からの音楽的影響が強いのも妙にうなずける。

　「Marble Gods」は今年の3月にイギリスのSonic Cathedral Recordingsから出たデビュー・シングル。前述の「Cherry Blossom」と共に本国スウェーデンのHAHA FONOGRAMからリリースされたアルバム『Unknown Colors』や『Just Like A Ghost EP』にも収録されている。Fastcut Recordsから出た国内盤もあるので、この機会にぜひチェックしてほしい。

In a glittering ceremony in Birmingham over the bank holiday weekend, 26-year-old Clair Cooper from London, was crowned Miss Universe Great Britain 2009. Clair, a vibrant red-head, will now go on to represent Great Britain at Miss Universe this summer in the Bahamas. The event, which was organised by Vibe Models and sponsored by Dress Stop.com, involved 34 finalists from across England, Scotland and Wales. The women took part in an interview and then three catwalk rounds in front of a panel of judges, including TV presenter, Nick Knowles, Big Brother 2008 winner, Rachel Rice, Beauty Editor, Sue Moxley, TV presenter, Lizzie Cundy and from Gladiators Du’aine Ladejo (Predator) and Amy Guy (Siren).

Clare said: “Since I was very young, I have always been a huge fan of the Miss Universe competition. To get the chance to actually be a part of it this year representing Great Britain is a dream come true. I have worked very hard preparing for this weekend and I’m thrilled that it has paid off.” This year the Miss Universe Great Britain competition raised more than £30,000 for it’s chosen charity the Joshua Foundation - an organisation that provides holidays and life experiences for children with terminal cancer.

As well as going to Miss Universe, Clair will also spend much of her year acting as an ambassador for The Joshua Foundation travelling to the likes of Mongolia, Australia and Romania.

Paula Abbandonato, director of Vibe Models, said: “We are thrilled with our winner and delighted to have raised so much for charity at the same time. It’s been a very exciting year and we wish Clair the best of luck at Miss Universe in August.”

Model, actress and former Miss Rhode Island USA, Claudia Jordan will serve as co-host. Peter Elias, former franchise holder for the local leg of the international pageant, resigned in December 2008, saying it was too expensive to produce the show with little help from the Government and corporate sponsors. Newsday learnt that Culture Minister Marlene Mc Donald met Elias, in April, and was told that he will assist if called upon. This country’s participation at the Miss World 2009 competition, also appears doubtful. Efforts to reach Mc Donald yesterday were futile as Newsday was told that she was out of the office. Miss Universe Australia runner-up Jade Russell is poised to take the crown from winner Rachael Finch who is expected to be sacked as early as today or tomorrow morning. Miss Universe Australia director Deborah Miller secretly met with Russell, 22, in Melbourne last night to hammer out her succession details. The dramatic development comes after complaints made by Ms Finch about her contract with the pageant organization were leaked to the media. A source close to Ms Russell said the Melbourne model received a call from Ms Miller yesterday afternoon and was told she would be given Ms Finch's title. It is understood Ms Finch will be sacked for bringing the Miss Universe Australia brand into disrepute, which is grounds for dismissal under her contract. It follows a letter Ms Finch wrote to the American arm of Miss Universe complaining her three-year exclusive contract had become like a prison sentence.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, Rachael Finch has denied she was on the verge of being sacked after a spat with pageant organizers. "I have not been replaced and Deb and I are pulling together in a positive direction. For someone to lose their title you have to do something wrong and in my case I haven't," she said. Cerljen will now represent Sweden at the upcoming Miss Universe 2009 pageant on the Bahamas. Renate will be the first non-winner of the Miss Sweden pageant since 1952 to represent Sweden at Miss Universe since Miss Sweden lost its rights to crown a contestant for Miss Universe earlier in 2009. Cerljen will also be the first delegate from Sweden at the international final since 2006 when Josephine Alhanko placed in the Top 20. Dededo Girl Wins Miss Guam Universe Title

Dededo native Racine Manley won the 2009 Miss Guam Universe title in a May 31 event that marks the second year that the pageant was held since its seven year hiatus. Racine is a native Chamorro who is 24 years old and stands 5 feet and 6 inches. She listed dancing, running, among others as her hobbies. She is also interested in studying the native language of Guam and in her official bio, she used some phrases in the Chamorro language including the greeting Hafa Adai.

Aside from snatching the big title, Racine also received several special awards including Miss Photogenic, Best in Evening Gown and Best in Swimsuit. Finishing as first runner-up is Clarissa Damian and the second runner-up is Jodee Catahay.

On the Swedish National Day a.k.a. Swedish Flag's Day, The Miss Sweden Universe is in Torekällbergetsvärdshus in Södertälje for the finals night. Sixteen lovely ladies will compete for the title and it will be decided on who will go to the Bahamas and represent Sweden in the big finale, August 23.

The organization invites everyone to see the finale. Doors open at 7 pm and closes at 2 am. They will take in about 1300 people. In Sweden you can book a table by calling 08-55037004. The year 2009 marks the comeback of Sweden at Miss Universe. The country failed to participate during the 2007 and 2008 edition of Miss Universe as the Swedish National Director cited ideological differences with the Miss Universe Organization on what consitutes beauty. Fegurðarsamkeppni Íslands sent a message to Missosology that Ingibjörg Ragnheiður Egilsdóttir will be sent to Miss Universe 2009 to represent Iceland. She is the first runner-up in last year's Ungfrú Ísland. contest. Born in May 21, 1985, Ingibjörg likes lobster and grilled seafood and works as a chemist. She also would like to travel and learn the culture of other countries.

This year marks the comeback of Iceland in the Miss Universe contest wherein it has an on and off relationship. In 1998, Iceland stopped sending delegates to the pageant and instead concentrated on Miss World. In 2006 it made a comeback by sending its 2006 winner Sif Aradóttir. The country was again absent in 2007 and 2008.

The towering 181 beauty is just 21 years old and hails from Budapest. She is supposed to join in last year's contest but she was afflicted with a minor illness. Zsuzsa, who is a top favorite, is now believed to be a Top 15 material for the Miss Universe 2009 contest to be held in the Bahamas this August. Well in fact, according to Missosology contributor Viktória Virovec, most Hungarians believed that Zsuzsa will win the Miss Hungary crown with Orsolya as first runner-up and Anett Maximovits as Miss Earth Hungary.

Miss República Dominicana Universo may saw the exit of one of its beautiful queens in recent memory but the flair and pomp of the May 17 finals night and the uncomfortable – as well as comfortable – moments that came with it, made the entire contest quite interesting. Twenty delegates all across the eastern side of the island of Hispaniola competed in the said event including the top favorite and Miss World Dominican Republic 2007 Ada Aimee de la Cruz. She was also the delegate that beauty experts of Missosology predicted to win.

At the start of the pageant however, stiff opposition began to emerge. Miss Monte Plata Ana Rita Contreras gave brilliant performances in swimsuit and gown. Miss Distrito Nacional Rocio Castellanos was also powerful onstage. Tough opposition was not the only thing that pressured the delegates. The discerning taste of the reigning Miss Universe Dayana Mendonza should rack up the tension among the contestants. She sat as one of the judges and came onstage to give a speech on HIV/AIDS prevention. This is where the snippets of awkwardness came in. At one point she quipped, “You know, use the condom.” A little bit later, Miss Valverde Jenny Blanco almost tripped.

Setting aside all these gaffes, the pageant was about to end with an upset but the final interview eventually made things clearer. Ada Aimee’s question with regards to abortion allowed her to say that God is the one who gave life and only He can take it away. Ana Rita was the frontrunner until that moment. Her answer on what makes the Latinas different was not really a defining moment for her.

Marianne Cruz will formally pass the Miss República Dominicana Universo crown this May 17th and with her are experiences too difficult to forget. Marianne rose to become the 2nd runner-up when no one really thought she is good enough for Top 15. The day after the preliminaries, we made the following observations:

"She was usually below our radar sweep but Mariane still creates that nagging feeling that she might pull out a surprise. One of the most memorable thing about Mariane is not her swimsuit nor her gown prelims but her National Costume. Confident that she will win, Mariane is a lady to watch!"

And she surprised us indeed. She managed to wrestle out some of the Miss Universe 2008 favorites and came quite close in winning. Marianne was criticized for using a different gown during the finals night but the end justified the means. She wouldn't end up as second runner-up if her gown is hideous.

Marianne's life did not simply revolve around Miss Universe 2008. With all the limelight and with all the charity works, Marianne believes it helped her a lot. She confessed in a local newspaper, "I grew a lot, I became a spiritually stronger person".

After the Miss Republica Dominicana, what's next for Marianne? Well, she is now seriously thinking a career in Mexico's Televisa. With her attitude brimming with confidence and humility, there is no doubt she will do well on the path that she chose to take.

New Miss Canada Universe Crowned

Twenty-three year old Mariana Valente who moved from Brazil to Canada at the young age of 12, won the Miss Universe Canada 2009 title in a glittering finals night held in the city of Toronto. Mariana will represent Canada in the upcoming Miss Universe 2009 pageant to be held in the Bahamas.

Fifty-seven women from all across Canada participated in the pageant. The delegates represented the diversity in Canada as some of them were born as far as Ghana and South Korea. Last year's winner Samantha Tajik can trace her roots in Iran while the last Miss Universe from Canada, Natalie Glebova, was from Russia. Missosology's predicted winner Ksenia Mezenina, who was born and raised in Russia, ended as 2nd runner-up.

Mariana speaks Portuguese, English and French and studies at York University. She stands 5'9" and is the Miss Latina Canada 2007.
